I Got A Kick Out Of These “Masonic Secrets”

A Traveling Man

A Traveling Man

A Brother of mine has received a bunch of Masonic collectible stuff as a gift from a Masonic widow.  One of the pieces of ephemera was a little card, brown with age, with the following anecdote that all Traveling Men will find amusing:

The Traveller

From One of the Boys Who Has Been There.

A traveling man who applied for a loan of money, was put through the following examination by a member of the Drummer’s Association:

“Where did you come from?”

“From the town of St. John’s Mich.”

“What came you here to do?”

“To take a few orders and to collect a bill of Billson.”

“Then you are a drummer?”

“I am so taen and accepted by the boys.”

“How may I know you to be a drummer?”

“By my cheek and my forty-pound sample case.  Try me.”

“How wll yo ube tried?”

“By the Squire’.”

“Why by the Squire’?”

“Because the “Squire is a magistrate.”

“Where were you first led to be a drummer?”

“In my mind.”

“Where next?”

“In a printing office adjoining a post of drummers.”

“How were you prepared?”

“By being divested of my last cent.”

“How were you received”

“On the toe of a boot, applied to the seat of my trousers.”

“What did that teach you?”

“Not to fool around too much.”

“What happened next?”

“I was put astraddle of a 2×4 and trotted nine times around the room, and then directed to the Left Bower for further instruction.”

“Did this teach you a lesson?”

“You bet.  It taught me to look out.”

“Shake, brother.  Will you be off or from?”

“Both, if I can borrow miney.”

“Have you any cigars?”

“I have.”

“Give em to me?”

“I did not so receive ‘em nor will I so impart em.”

“How will you dispose of ‘em?”

“On sixty days, two per cent.”

“All right, you begin.”

“No you begin.”

“You Must begin.”

“Up.”

“Em.”

“Set.”

“Set ‘em up.  the words and signs are right.  You are O.K.”

***

According to the Brother who received the card, the card itself (based on the age of the Brother who has gone to refreshment) was probably from the fifties or so.  After doing a little google search, I found a longer, better version of this tale here.  Interestingly, I came across this longer version on a couple of non-Masonic sites — needless to say, the posters of it were somewhat confused by it.  Amusing stuff!

A-Ha! Secret Masonic Handshake Exposed!

masonichandshakeOr not.  Frankly I can’t tell what’s supposed to be happening in this photograph that the Dominion Post of New Zealand breathlessly claims must be showing The Secret Masonic Handshake, because, well, there were some Freemasons gathering for an event and shaking hands.

This kind of thing cracks me up every time.  Hey, if you are so curious, why not join for crying out loud?

Check out the ridiculous story here.

Kook watch: Freemasons Use MTV To Further Satanic Plot. Heh.

So this explains everything about my misspent youth:  MTV has been a secret tool of the Freemasons to promote Satanism all along.  The proof (and unintentional hilarity) appears earnestly in this video.

Masonic Wives Crack Wise

antiqueromanticmasonicpc1The unsung heroes of Freemasonry are undoubtedly the ever-patient Masonic wives and girlfriends.  Here’s an amusing article with an unvarnished take on their perspective as football Masonic widows.  For a taste of the tongue-in-cheek tone, here’s what one wife had to say:

“Okay. This is what I call it: day care for men. They let him come over at 6:30 after work, they feed him, let him play with his friends and he comes home all tired and ready for bed . . .”

Masonic Folk Art On Display

exhibitmasonicexhibitmasonic2The Webb Gallery sounds like my kind of place.  Located 30 miles south of Dallas, Texas, it houses the curious collection of folk art, carnival banners, and fraternal objects that the Webbs have amassed over the last 20 years.

The latest exhibit features folk art fraternal items.  Freemasonry is, of course, well represented, but the show also features objects from the Odd Fellows, Elks and other fraternal orders.  The show is called Art of the Secret Society. Here is the gallery’s website.

If, like me, you are fascinated by Masonic folk art, Ebay is an absolute treasure trove of this stuff.  Check out, for example, this magnificent Civil War era carved Masonic walking stick.  It was carved by Confederate Col. C. Dorsey while he was being held in a Union prisoner of war at Camp Chase, Ohio.

Speculation Surrounding Rapper Jay-Z’s Supposed Masonic Symbols

JAYZOne of my favorite topics for Masonic Regalia is Freemasonry’s influence on pop culture.  So when I came across a web article that mentions Jay-z’s use of Masonic symbols in his videos and clothing line, I was intrigued.

The article is called Jay-Z: A Master Of Occult Wisdom? and was published on NPR affiliate wbur 90.9 radio station website.  It quotes Mitch Horowitz, author of American Occult, who had this to say about Jay-Z and freemasonry:  “Jay-Z’s Rocawear clothing line also often draws upon masonic symbols: pentagrams, obelisks, pyramids, the all-seeing eye.”

On seeing this, I checked out his clothing website, www.rocawear.com, and, well, didn’t find anything remotely Masonic looking.  This actually surprised me given that another urban clothing line, Black Scale, has clear Masonic overtones in its designs.

Next I checked out a video mentioned in the article as having “occult” symbolism (the author uses the words occult and Freemasonry almost interchangeably) called Run This Town.  While there are a lot of dark hooded figures, the only thing that raised my eyebrows in terms of Freemasonry is a deliberate hand gesture at minute 4:36 that Scottish Rite Brethren might find intriguing.  Here’s the video:

If you see anything else, let me know!

Here’s the full article in question.

The Publishing World Abuzz Over Dan Brown Masonic Novel

brown-650Here’s an amusingly breathless overview of the buzz surrounding Dan Brown’s new novel, reportedly to be titled “The Lost Symbol”.  I just hope the stuff about Freemasonry rings true and is positive, especially if it’s as central to the book as everyone seems to think it will be. Check it out here.

Freemasons Help Construct Real-Life Labyrinth

alabrynthHistorically, Masonic tradition makes a clear distinction between “operative” and “speculative” Freemasons, the difference being that the former work with real stone and the latter use the tools of stone construction to teach moral lessons.

Nowadays, Freemasonry is only speculative.  But the members of Tehachapi Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite from Bakersfield will be  acting as operative masons to assist in the construction of a stone walking-labyrinth like the one pictured above in Philip Marx Central Park, Tehachapi, CA.

Of course, since this type of labyrinth is a traditional symbol of finding one’s true self on the path of life, one could argue that they will be working in a speculative capacity as well.
