One of my favorite topics for Masonic Regalia is Freemasonry’s influence on pop culture. So when I came across a web article that mentions Jay-z’s use of Masonic symbols in his videos and clothing line, I was intrigued.
The article is called Jay-Z: A Master Of Occult Wisdom? and was published on NPR affiliate wbur 90.9 radio station website. It quotes Mitch Horowitz, author of American Occult, who had this to say about Jay-Z and freemasonry: “Jay-Z’s Rocawear clothing line also often draws upon masonic symbols: pentagrams, obelisks, pyramids, the all-seeing eye.”
On seeing this, I checked out his clothing website, www.rocawear.com, and, well, didn’t find anything remotely Masonic looking. This actually surprised me given that another urban clothing line, Black Scale, has clear Masonic overtones in its designs.
Next I checked out a video mentioned in the article as having “occult” symbolism (the author uses the words occult and Freemasonry almost interchangeably) called Run This Town. While there are a lot of dark hooded figures, the only thing that raised my eyebrows in terms of Freemasonry is a deliberate hand gesture at minute 4:36 that Scottish Rite Brethren might find intriguing. Here’s the video:
If you see anything else, let me know!
Here’s the full article in question.

Its FULL of masonic symbolism with quite an exhibition of protestant symbolism too. That would make sense tho, seeing as how Freemasonry is a conservative WASP – not Jewish or Catholic – institution. Hence Prince Hall.
I guess the masonic themed line came out in 2008 and I have been trying to find a shirt for my husband to no avail…
